Words To Live By
Stuff That's Important:
"If the family you came from sucked, make up a new one. Look at all the people there are to choose from. If the family you are in hurts, get on the bus. Like now."
- Lidia Yuknavitch
Stuff We Did
Runaway. Orphan. Drifter.
Easy to Play. Hard to Feel.
Toussaint McCall - Nothing Takes The Place Of You
I moved your picture
From my walls
And I replaced them
Both large and small
And each new day
Finds me so blue
Takes the place of you
I read your letters one by one
And I still love you
When it's all said and done
And oh, my darling I'm so blue
Takes the place of you
I, I write this letter
It's raining on my window pane
I, I feel the need of you
Because without you
Nothing seems the same
So I'll wait
Until you're home
Again I love you
But I'm all alone
And oh my darling
I'm so blue
Oh, but nothing takes the place of you
I Live. I Die. I Live Again.
"Do you believe in rock and roll?
Can music save your mortal soul?
And can you teach me how to dance real slow?"
- Don McLean, American Pie
Just Another Sad Story
OverviewIt wasn't until the fifteen year old Ashton met a young musician named Hunter that he started calling himself Vandal and finally found a place that felt like home. Hunter was a few years older and the two fell for each other hard, running away after only a few weeks when it became clear Vandal's latest foster mom was about to send him back and separate the pair. Things were pretty tough, but for the next six months Vandal, Hunter and his dog Rusty were family.
It wasn't to last though. Each of the boys picked up a few habits along the way, but it was Hunter's addiction to heroin that finished him in the end, Vandal waking one morning to find the love of his young life had choked to death in his sleep. Lost and nearly entirely alone, Vandal and Rusty spent the next couple of years drifting from place to place, finally arriving in Fallcoast sometime in May 2016.
It could all have ended very quickly after that. Vandal fell in with what can only be described as a bad crowd and died in exactly the same way as Hunter - the result of a drug deal gone badly wrong late in June of the same year. Fate had something else in store for the boy however and a geist posing as his mom brought him back from the brink. Death proved something of a spiritual experience for Vandal, though at this point he's still trying to figure out what it all means to him.
They reckon he was about a week old when he was found abandoned at a truck stop along the I-35 just outside Des Moines, Iowa. With no trace of his parents to be found the boy was given the name Ashton Smith and brought up in the system. Passed from foster home to foster home, life was tough for the young Ashton, who quickly became known as a problem. He was kicked out of plenty of schools and had more than a couple of brushes with the law as he grew.
In The Flesh
DescriptionA crop of medium-length, sable black hair sits atop his head, enough to get in his eyes when it's not kept swept back out of the way. He's got gauges in his ears and a tattoos of a small, reversed cross beneath his left eye and a swallow on his neck.
They don't stop there either, with skulls and roses winding down his arms and various others scattered across his form. The swallow gets repeated on his right hand, while the left bears a skull and crossbones. The word "Mischief" is inked across his knuckles, a sentiment often echoed in his expression. The tattoos seem like an ongoing piece of work, some are coloured, while others are not, and the likelihood is they'll continue to multiply as time goes on.
As far as clothes go, basic and functional is a primary concern, though he adds a bit of a rock and roll flair as well. Black jeans are held up by a studded belt and most often paired with a wifebeater or similar. A well-used leather jacket may go on over that if the weather demands and the sneakers on his feet are nearly always scuffed and worn.
Tall and slender, standing just a whisker over six feet, he's got the kind of persona that grabs you by the throat when he walks into a room and doesn't let up until he leaves. His skin is pale and his complexion smooth and youthful, the boy looks to be somewhere in his late teens. His face is sculpted with a strong jaw and angular cheekbones providing a backdrop for expressive features, the centrepiece of which are his eyes, deep blue and soulful.
- He's a Dedboi
Vandal died on the evening of 29 June 2016 as a result of an overdose of heroin. It wasn't even glamorous, he choked on his own puke while he was passed out. He made a deal with a geist claiming to be the spirit of his dead mom - she brought him back from the brink and Vandal woke up in a dumpster.
- He plays music
Vandal's a pretty talented musician and spends a lot of his free time practising his guitar. He's a pretty decent singer too, as it happens. Hunter was a big fan of music from the sixties and seventies and this is still Vandal's favourite to play and sing, though he can be coaxed into some more modern stuff as well.
- He loves dogs
After Hunter died, Vandal took his brown and white American Bulldog, Rusty and the two have been partners in crime ever since. Drifting from place to place, the boy and his dog are fiercely loyal to one another, though lately a third member has been added to their pack in the form of Bruno, a tiny black Pug.
- He has fun
Vandal is certainly no angel and food, booze, pills and sex are all pretty high on his list of favourite things, but he's generally good natured and easygoing to a fault. Whether it's playing video games and eating burritos, going out to a bar or just walking the dogs or skating in the park, he's always up for a good time.
The Usual Haunts
- Forbidden Arts
Vandal got taken in by Kilo and Hoax not long after he arrived in Fallcoast and he's been living at the tattoo shop ever since. If you're a regular around the shop, chances are good you've seen him there.
- The Gallows
A good place for meeting other bound, Vandal does a bit of work here from time to time. If you drink at The Gallows he might have served you behind the bar or cleared your table. Just, don't mention his age.
- His Website
Vandal officially gave up working street corners a while ago, but you can totally still pay to see him naked, he's just taken it online. Vandal is starting to get some recognition as a Camboi.
People Who Matter
When this guy fucks up, he fucks up big style. Still, he's always looked out for me and when it really counted? He saved my ass. Total big brother. I just wish he was less murdery.
The most badass guy I ever met. More powerful than anyone I know and has forgotten more shit about death and the underworld than most people ever learn. This guy is my hero.
The coolest big sister alive (or dead). We fight sometimes, but I love her more than almost anyone. Taught me almost everything I know about being dead and a total fucking badass.
Turns out vampire boyfriends aren't just shit that turns up in chick flicks. I was pretty fucking sure I was done feeling this way about guys. The one I can always rely on to have my back.
The brains of the operation. I found (stole) this little guy while out on one of Kilo's totally legit scavenger hunts. Turns out he loves burritos too, so he fit right in.
My oldest friend. My partner in crime. The one I know I can always depend on. We've been through so much shit together and you're the only one who misses him as much as I do.
- Dmitri, Bastian & Cale
Okay, so it's probably not normal to make friends with the fuckers that overdosed you on heroin and left you to die in the backroom of a club. But it's not normal to come back from it, either.
Ran into this guy at Safeword one time and he plays a mean fuckin' game of truth or dare. Second best dude who lives with his girlfriend above her tattoo shop I know. Pretty exclusive list.
Frozen in time and nearly frozen in a fuckin' pond until I dragged him outta it. He seems pretty clueless about a lotta stuff, explaining dildos to him was a fucking nightmare. Cute as all hell though.
HOLY FUCK! This guy is like a totally, one hundred percent legit fucking Rock Star. Turns out he's pretty decent at video games as well as being some vampire's blood slave, right up until he died.
Straight, though I try not to hold it against him. He's fun to hang out with and pretty smart. I think he's got a crush on Kilo, which is fucking hilarious. His mom's a cop though, so watch out!
- Mrs B
I can't talk to her about being dead, being in a gang, drinking, drugs, being a camboi, working in a bar, any of my friends and most of the stuff I do. But, she seems cool.
Fallen from Grace
Forgot the most important lesson: Krewe before fuckin' everything else. You changed so much, and not in a good way. The sad thing is that I kinda miss you. Good luck, little dude.
