“The quieter you become, the more you can hear.”

– Ram Dass

xxxxxMicah Abernathy is a new addition to the student population of St. John's University. People who are familiar with the school may have seen him around, going to and from the dorms and spending most of his time in the Fine Arts building and the studios for fine arts majors. He seems a little stand-offish or distracted at times, though it only takes brief observation (or an awareness that he has an ASL translator in his classes) to determine that he is deaf, not self-absorbed.

xxxxxHe does seem to be a member of the Abernathy Clan, though he does not dress all in black or have any obvious tics or twitches. Typical gossip is that he is the child of a professor -- sociology or psychology department, maybe. Overall he seems a friendly enough guy, though his disability puts some challenges in the way of easy socialization.

RP Hooks
  • School/Art - Micah is studying art at St. John's and you might run into him at class or in the studio. He is focused on portraiture, on capturing the essence of someone in artistic representation. Perhaps you need your portrait done?
  • Occult/Psychic - Though not publicly a psychic, Micah often can pick up impressions and images of the history of places and objects. He has an interest in occult matters and psychic phenomena, and has some heightened sensitivity to arcane magic. He is an Abernathy, after all -- and so these matters always pique his curiosity.
  • Deafness/Deaf Culture - Micah has been deaf since birth and has always lived with one foot in the hearing world and one foot in deaf culture. He has studied in deaf-focused institutions and in mixed schools and often has played the role of educator and ambassador. He is always interested in meeting other ASL speakers.
  • Abernathy - Though Micah has not grown up close to his family, he has been reunited with his father Jake and has been busy getting reacquainted with the extended members of the Clan. He is always up to meet a cousin/uncle/aunt/etc.

  • Jake -- He's not the dad I grew up with, but he's the father whose name I carry. I'm not sure what we'll end up being to each other: father/son? Friends? I do know that when he's around I'm not the weirdest person in the room, and that's saying something.
  • Evelyn -- Evelyn is the ASL translator that is most often assigned to work with Micah at school and depending on the circumstances he sometimes engages her to be with him when he knows he'll be in a situation where he needs a translator. She's a graduate student in history who just happens to have a deaf parent and does translation work on the side. She offers a little more 'editorial expression' than is strictly professional for a translator, but she is otherwise very reliable and has a good sense of humor.
OOC Notes

xxxxxMicah was born deaf; he suffers from a congenital sensorineural deficit that means he has never really had a lived experience or memory of sound/language. He prefers to use ASL to communicate but given that it's not widely known he usually has a notepad and pen close at hand, as well as his smartphone; these days technology can also help communication quite a bit. He can read lips, but it requires a good line of sight and it is not always effective if someone speaks too quickly or with a thick accent. It also means he has a lot of difficulty if many people are speaking at the same time or very quickly one after the other. It helps if you pose about where you're looking or the rate you're speaking at to help me get a sense of what Micah would or would not perceive.

xxxxxWhen posing I often write in English syntax rather than ASL syntax; both for comprehension and because Micah is a native ASL speaker and his skill at the language dwarfs his player's.

Quiet - Matilda the Musical

Quiet -- Like silence, but not really silent.
Just that still sort of quiet,
Like the sound of a page being turned in a book
Or a pause in a walk in the woods.
Quiet -- Like silence, but not really silent.
Just that nice kind of quiet,
Like the sound when you lie upside down in your bed.
Just the sound of your heart in your head.
And though the people around me,
Their mouths are still moving;
The words they are forming cannot reach me anymore!
And it is quiet.
And I am warm.
Like I've sailed.
Into the eye of the storm.
