Maria farm.jpg

Maria grew up with her father and brothers on a small farm in a very rural area of Russia. To an American, her home would have looked like something out of the Great Depression. The farm equipment aged and kept usable only with great effort and care. The family had very few modern conveniences, their icebox ancient and a radio their most modern entertainment. Raising animals and growing what meager crops the hard scrabble ground would yield made for a hard life, but the only one Maria had ever known.

As she came of age, neighboring farmers began to come calling. A few years before, the farm's meager group of cows had given birth to what turned out to be a fine bull, and Maria still remembered the satisfied look on her father's face as others came to check out the animal and make offers to buy it. That was the same expression he had now when the local men would visit to get a look at Maria. Sometimes the farmers brought a son for whom they were seeking a wife, but as often there were older men eyeing her for themselves despite great differences in years.

Events reached their worst when Maria's father took the girl to the nearest town, which was a long enough trip that Maria had only been there a handful of times in her life. The farmer and his daughter paid visits to a number of people, and Maria knew her father was shopping for the best deal. Eventually they saw the richest man in town. An old man well past sixty, he had his fingers in most of the town's businesses. And he had a way of gazing at Maria that made her feel she needed a shower. Worse, as she stood on the other side of the room watching her father converse with the old man, Maria saw on her father's face that same look he'd had with the bull when he realized he'd heard the best offer he was going to.

The trip back to the farm was a quiet one, Maria's father lost in his thoughts and not realizing the girl had decided to run away that very night rather than find herself wed to the old man. She took only a few things and slipped away in the dark, making her way north until she arrived in a port town. The teen stowed away aboard a merchant freighter bound for America.

Now she has arrived in Fallcoast, Maine. Not speaking the language and in the country illegally, her prospects start out looking bleak. Even as she struggles to find her way in this completely foreign land, one has to wonder if the troubles of her past will some day catch up to her again.

Simon and Garfunkle - The Sound of Silence

Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence
