“Most believe there are two types of people who go into a crucible. The ones who become stronger from the experience and survive it, and the ones who die. But there's a third type. The ones who learn to love the fire and choose to stay in their crucible because it's easier to embrace the pain when it's all you know anymore.”

xxxxxThe dirty secret about fortune telling is that, when one considers all the variables, one can draw omens or auspicious connections with just about anything from just about anything else. This is especially true if one is considering events that have already happened. In Jericho Whittakers case, that auspicious event was that he happened to be born on the same day – very nearly at the same moment – that man first set foot on the moon; and he spent the next twenty years or so failing to live up to whatever grand prediction that should have indicated. Apart from being from a military family – his father served in Korea, is grandfather in both World Wars – Jericho’s life was supremely, dully ordinary. He was a local boy, raised middle class and did not particularly excel in school. If anything could be said to have stood out about his formative years, it’s that he had a decent run as a high school football player – but high school football is, of course, high school football. All in all, it wasn’t particularly surprising that he joined the Marines right after graduating high school. It was, after all, something of a family tradition – and Jericho did tend to do best in a structured sort of order. No one thought too much of it, either, given that back in 1988 it’d been almost an entire generation since the US was in a war; and though the Berlin Wall was still up and the Cold War still ongoing, in the era of Glasnost even Communism seemed to be on the decline. When the Wall finally came down a year into his service, everyone – Jericho included – thought he’d have an easy tour of it. A couple more years, he’d be out – or maybe he’d follow his grandfather’s footsteps and go lifer. The Cold War was effectively over, and there were no new threats on the horizon. None, that is, until August of 1990 when the Mesopotamian desert burst into a pyroclasm fire and smoke. Jericho’s unit was one of the first set of boots on the ground in the so-called Operation Desert Shield – and though the so-called Gulf War was over in a matter of weeks, its effects were felt for far longer. Still, America was victorious and suffered relatively few casualties as a whole, and everyone expected things to be wrapped up and the troops to be brought home rather quickly. For the most part, they were.

xxxxxIdealogical warfare. It wasn't as simple as being a soldier following orders. It wasn't even as cut and dry as a brigand or raider claiming the spoils of war or expanding territory; Jericho's Durance was war for wars sake. His Keepers - or Keeper, for there was plenty of evidence pointing to it simply being two facets of the same being - did not only warp the bodies of their charges, but their minds as well; instilling in them an absolute hatred for the other side, a sense of both personal and ethical abhorance towards their designated enemy. Over the generations, the form of this warfare changed - in Jericho's time, the contest was between demons and angels; but in the past it had seen daeva war with asura, efreet slay djinn, and even opposing elements such as fire and water take to the field. The one constant was that it was not simply a conflict; but it was a conflict in which each side firmly believed that the other needed to not simply be defeated, but obliterated entirely on moral grounds. Perhaps the Keepers, the lords of these wars, fed on the strife - or perhaps it simply amused them to watch the way their possessions raged and savaged one another, fighting tooth and nail to the last breath for a cause they were forced to believe in wholeheartedly.

xxxxxIt was into this landscape that Jericho found himself. He was Taken on his way home from deployment, and the thing left in his place simply reupped immediately - meaning that no one ever noticed anything unusual about his behaviour. Ten years passed in the real world; ten years that felt like lifetimes in Arcadia. Once again, he found himself on the front lines; a sword of righteousness and shield against evil - or so he thought. So he was made to believe. Eternal war, to which there would be no peace but the complete destruction of the enemy and all their works - except there was never any shortage of reinforcements.
