Here's the common refrain for a generation: a local young woman, raised on advice she could do anything she set her mind to, seeks her future in the big city. The sky's the limit — except it's the height of a recession. Cue soaring tuition and rock bottom wages, unpaid internships, dim prospects and brilliant rebellion. No matter how hard you work, the future stinks. Chiara is no different from every other Millennial boomeranging back with a gold-plated degree on a dross heap of student debt, except to hell with living among paintbrushes with her divorced mother. A girl has to have some pride.

But among the Wise, the melody grows richer, far more complex. Chiara had a debut a decade in the making, crashing a genteel party with one hell of an Awakening a few years back. The Consilium of Toronto stood no chance against an Enchanter. Her coming-out party brought a dreaded Mastigos out of retirement to be the newly minted mage's mentor. Who pulls those kinds of strings? Then before anyone has a chance to say boo, she vanished underwing except for occasional trips back to Fallcoast to keep up appearances. Now, Chiara is settling in the Granite Consilium in earnest.
